Monotone

MONOTONE (short name for Automatic Quality Control for Industrial Printing) is a project within the EU Growth Programme.

Thirteen partners from six different European countries have come together to improve production within the ceramic tile industry. The European tile industry is the world market leader and produces an estimated 1.5 billion square metres of ceramic tiles each year. The MONOTONE project aims at creating tools for improved quality (Monotone – implies a constant tone of colour) and less waste. A global control system that uses new sensors and an intelligent image analysis system will be developed within the project.

Three universities and one research institute cover the necessary IST technology. Three tile manufactures and six companies that supply technology and materials to the tile manufacturers, take part in the project.

SCI provides the research expertise in all aspects of tile manufacturing (e.g. process development, dyes, environmental impacts, printing, etc.) within the project. One of SCI’s the tasks is to develop better understanding and better control of screen printing and rotary photogravure printing for the decoration of tiles.
