The Swedish Ceramic Institute — SCI
An Industrial Research Institute for
Manufacturers and Users of Ceramic Materials

The Swedish Ceramic Institute is an industrial research institute working with product-oriented research and development of ceramics and closely related materials. We work with the processing and fabrication of ceramic materials as well as with materials properties and design questions.

Our activities include

  • Development of materials and processing
  • Technology transfer
  • Consultancy services
  • Education (workshops, courses etc)
  • Manufacture of prototypes
  • Powder analysis
  • Characterisation of materials

We work with most types of ceramic materials, such as oxides, nitrides and carbides. The main part of our research concerns the forming of materials from powders.

We have long experience of how the micro- and macrostructures can be controlled. A feature common to all ceramic materials is that their properties are closely related to the manufacturing process. There are a large number of different factors that will influence the final properties of the product.

Typical process steps in the manufacture of a ceramic product

We can produce large components (such as crucibles of 10 kg) as well as very small ones (such as 20 µm thin tapes).

The institute owns different types of equipment for processing but also for the characterisation and testing of the final products.
